In 2013, Shaw Family Medical embarked on a journey to support the aspirations of graduating seniors from Shaw High School who aimed to pursue careers in the allied health professions. This initiative began with the biennial awarding of stipends, initially providing two deserving students with $500 each over four semesters, equating to $125 per semester.
By 2015, the program expanded its reach, awarding stipends to six graduating seniors. That year also marked a significant evolution in the program’s ethos as the stipends were named to honor “Trailblazer” healthcare professionals who inspired the owner of Shaw Family Medical, Dr. Nora Gough-Davis, to achieve excellence in healthcare delivery. The honorees—Dr. Walter C. Gough, Mrs. May Ella Bailey Gough, Dr. Willie B. Lucas, Dr. Nate Brown, Mrs. Nancy Mosley-Bonnie, and Mrs. Willie Bea Taylor—were chosen for their remarkable contributions to healthcare.
The program continued to evolve, and by 2017, it had extended eligibility to graduating seniors in the West and North Bolivar Consolidated School Districts, including Broad Street High School, Rosedale High School, Ray Brooks School, and Shaw High School. In 2021, the program further broadened its scope to include graduating senior applicants from Cleveland Central High School, McEvans School, and Northside High School.
Building on this legacy of support and encouragement, MMIC Shaw Family Medical is excited to announce the introduction of our first-ever Entrepreneur Stipend. This initiative aims to empower the entrepreneurial spirit among 2023 graduating seniors from high schools in Bolivar, Sunflower, Washington, and Coahoma counties. The Entrepreneur Stipend is designed to foster innovation and entrepreneurial endeavors, encouraging students to pursue their business aspirations with the same passion and dedication as our healthcare stipends. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing them with the resources and support needed to turn their ideas into reality.
